Ben Lomax

Senior Project Engineer, NSW

#A true collaborator

From working as a labourer to being the Senior Project Engineer on a major transport project, Ben Lomax didn’t always know he wanted to be in the construction industry and cites a culmination of life adventures and his tenure at BESIX Watpac for helping him realise his potential.

Hailing from country town Werris Creek in New South Wales, Ben has always enjoyed working in the outdoors. He attributes his strong work ethic in construction to the valuable experience gained on his family farm. Following a year abroad working as a sports assistant teacher post-high school, Ben returned home with a newfound sense of maturity and a resolute determination to uncover his true passion.

“When I got back from being overseas it was working with my uncle in residential construction that made me realise how much I like being in construction and that’s what more or less drew me in,” Ben said.

“When I got back from being overseas it was working with my uncle in residential construction that made me realise how much I like being in construction and that’s what more or less drew me in,” Ben said.

Starting as a Cadet with BESIX Watpac in 2017, Ben decided to complete his university studies at the same time. The symbiotic relationship between theory and practice unfolded in a supportive and collaborative environment, setting the stage for his rapid growth.

“The open collaboration between our team is why I love working at BESIX Watpac and the willingness for people to ask questions and bounce ideas around is one of our strengths - it’s an open forum between the whole team,” Ben said.

He’s now worked on a variety of impressive projects including the much-anticipated Barangaroo Station which he says has put his networking and stakeholder engagement skills to the test. He’s also been a part of Natura (a high-end residential development), NSW Health and Department of Justice Forensic Medicine and Coroners Court and was the Site Engineer overseeing the construction of the Western Sydney International Airport Experience Centre.

It’ll come as no surprise, that Ben’s collaborative attitude and work ethic saw him win BESIX Watpac’s Employee of the Year Award in 2023.

“My first thought when I won – I was blown away and very grateful to be recognised. It’s not only recognition for the work I do but also the work the entire team does; I’ve been recognised through the hard work of the entire team,” Ben said.

While Ben credits teamwork as the corner stone for success, it's his ability to elevate and applaud his team that distinguishes him as an individual. His journey, from a labourer to a Senior Project Engineer, serves as an inspiration and an example of BESIX Watpac’s values of passion, co-creation, and delivering operational excellence.
