Townsville’s new Queensland Country Bank Stadium, delivered by leading national contractor Watpac, was showcased to a crowd of around 10,000 locals during an Open Day on 22 February 2020.

Watpac’s construction of the world-class sports and entertainment venue involved over 1.1 million man hours and nearly 488 local businesses in the supply chain.

The 25,000-seat stadium features an impressive 200 square metre scoreboard, 110+ trees, 30,000+ plants, 200,000+ bolts and screws, two kilometres of beer lines and 2,500 tonnes of steel, which is equivalent to 1,250 cars.

Each truss of the pandanus-leaf inspired, architecturally designed roof was carefully lifted into place to cover more than 75% of the stadium.

Watpac CEO Jean-Pol Bouharmont said the completion of the $290 million stadium was a momentous achievement for the company.

“Watpac’s legacy of building Queensland’s future continues with a landmark stadium for North Queensland that showcases our expertise and core values in action, particularly co-creation and excellence.

“Together with our delivery partners and stakeholders, Watpac has set a new benchmark for major project planning and execution, including strong local content, community engagement and Indigenous participation outcomes,” Mr Bouharmont said.

Watpac Northern Area Manager Bryan Glancy, a Townsville local, said the extended project team was proud to have delivered the stadium.

“The Queensland Country Bank Stadium is a jewel in the crown of Watpac’s more than 20-year history operating in Townsville.

“We sincerely thank Watpac’s local staff, contractors and the hundreds of trades, apprentices and business owners that worked tirelessly to realise the vision for this iconic stadium,” Mr Glancy said.
