Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner held a media conference overlooking the river to mark the commencement of piling works which will set the critical foundations for the bridge and its signature 95 metre single mast.

The bulk of the ten-month piling operation will be undertaken from barges which have taken up position in the river. The barges will be supplied with pile casings via the river from a stockpile of locally made casings at the project’s marine logistics yard at the Port of Brisbane.

Councillor Schrinner highlighted the vital role the bridge will play in tourism and for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games once completed in 2023. In the meantime, he pointed to its important economic stimulus for the Brisbane region.

“This project is creating more than 300 jobs, will employ 50 apprentices and 90% of the materials sourced for this bridge are coming from South East Queensland suppliers,” Councillor Schrinner said.

BESIX Watpac’s General Manager Operational Support, Bram Gruwez said the commencement of major works was a key milestone.

“Reaching this important phase in the project is the culmination of many months of detailed design and engineering with experts from all over the globe coming to Brisbane to work on this project, so we’re really excited to start on the permanent works.

“This bridge will be an iconic landmark, right up there with the most spectacular bridges delivered by the BESIX Group around the world and it will be a great statement of the BESIX Watpac capability,” Bram said.
