Watpac has completed the $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital in Melbourne, boosting capacity for Victoria’s healthcare system as the State responds to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The 13,000-square-metre expansion – one of the first successful public-private partnership (PPP) expansions of an operating hospital in Australia – comprises 12 ICU beds as part of the hospital’s new ICU, 128 multi-day beds, 12 day surgical beds as part of a new day surgery unit, and four additional operating theatres, all operated by Monash Health, as well as upgrades to pathology, pharmacy, back of house support facilities and over 300 additional car spaces.

The expansion will also provide important training facilities for Victoria’s next generation of medical, nursing and allied health staff with the new teaching and training spaces for Monash University.

Watpac was part of the Plenary Health consortium, also comprising Plenary Group and BGIS, contracted by the Victorian Government to deliver the project under a PPP.

Work commenced in 2017 and Watpac leaned on its strong local track record in live healthcare operating environments including projects at Frankston Private Hospital and Knox Private Hospital, Herston Quarter in Brisbane (PPP) and Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai Hospital in Sydney.

After joining leading European contractor BESIX Group in late 2018, Watpac is bringing enhanced capabilities and experience in healthcare projects to the Australian market.

This includes seasoned, locally-based project delivery expertise; direct access to over 200 in-house engineers; and further experience in large, international hospital and healthcare projects in live environments such as Abu Dhabi’s The Cleveland Clinic  (400,000 square metres) and the Groupe Hospitalier Ile-De-France  in Paris (56,000 square metres).
